Roger Grasas was born in Barcelona in 1970. After graduating in Optics in 1992, he moved to Menorca, where he discovered his passion for photography. In 1998, he obtained a Graduate Degree in Photography from the EFFPC and began his career covering reports for various NGOs in Central America. In 2004, he completed a Postgraduate Degree in Aesthetics at the UAB and began studies in Philosophy at the UB, where he graduated with a focus on aesthetics and political philosophy. In 2015, he completed his training at the ICP in New York. In 2009, he moved to Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, where he combined commercial assignments with the realization of his first long-term projects: Min Turab and Ha Aretz.
For Grasas, the journey becomes the common thread of his work, while the territory emerges as the central core of his narratives. At the intersection between investigative documentary and author photography, his projects explore the complexity of the present through the representation of a strange and alienated contemporary landscape, giving special relevance to the role of technology in a post-capitalist world. Connections between geography, history, and sociopolitical issues such as difference and hyperreality are recurring elements in series such as Atenea, Hotel, dulce hotel and WALLS.
His work has been exhibited in more than twenty countries and he has published seven photobooks. He has received several international awards, including the LensCulture Award (2018), Sydney HEADon (2018), PhotoEspaña Discoveries (2018), Life Framer (2020), Daylight Awards (2020) and the Silver Medal Verzasca (2021). His photobook Ha Aretz (Kehrer Verlag, 2022), was a finalist for the Arles Festival Dummy Award , while Hotel, Sweet Hotel (Eds. Posibles, 2023), received an ARTS Libris Award.
Grasas combines his artistic production with the direction of the Postgraduate Course in Documentary Photography at the IDEP School in Barcelona. He also collaborates with the IEFC, where he teaches courses on landscape semantics, and is part of the Institute of Inequalities and the NGO Medicus Mundi, with whom he has produced and published the projects WALLS and Ubuntu, respectively.
Parallel to his work as a documentary photographer, Grasas develops a line of experimental visual creation under his ‘alter ego’ Sasha R. Gregor. With a phenomenological realistic approach and a methodology based on iconographic technologies, Gregor’s work is a reflection on the epistemology of the real. www.sashargregor
